The Aboriginal Head Start Program on Reserve (ASHOR) is a national, community-based early intervention program that focuses on early childhood development for First Nations, Inuit and Métis children and their families living on-reserve and off-reserve. The AHSOR program works collaboratively with the Stoney Health Services teams, the Stoney Nakoda School system and the Stoney Child and Family Services to provide play-based programming for preschool children from 3 to 6 years of age and their parents living in Morley and surrounding areas.

The ultimate goals of the program are to increase socialization and learning skills among children requiring additional assistance as well as to enhance their self-awareness, self-esteem, development and connection to the Stoney community.

Services Provided: Culturally relevant, age and developmentally-appropriate, indoor and outdoor, daily ASHOR programming includes:

  • Access to age and culturally appropriate books, videos, computer programs, toys etc.
  • Conversation and language skill development activities
  • Creative expression through art, music, dancing, singing and storytelling
  • Interactive and solitary play that promote learning of social skills
  • Modified curriculums adapted for children with special needs
  • Parental / family involvement activities
  • Role playing and dramatic play
  • Sampling nutritious foods, including traditional foods, through food preparation
  • Sensory learning experiences including touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing
  • Social support
  • Speech and Language Therapy Services
  • Transportation from home to program and back
